Cog Speed Clock
The Mini-Cog, a rapid, valid, and reliable screening tool for cognitive impairment, consists of 3-word recall and an executive clock drawing test CDT. McCarten and colleagues highlighted its speed and high acceptance by older veterans . Two alternate distractor tasks may successfully replace clock drawing in the Mini-Cog and improve
The Mini-Cog has been tested with two different time settings 1110 and 820 with similar results. However, 1110 may have an added advantage the proximity of the 10 and 11 on the clock face may prompt some individuals to place the hands pointing to those two numbers, unmasking subtler executive deficits.
Normal clock 2 points. A normal clock has all numbers placed in the correct sequence and approximately correct position e.g., 12, 3, 6 and 9 are in anchor positions with no missing or duplicate numbers. Hands are pointing to the 11 and 2 1110. Hand length is not scored. Inability or refusal to draw a clock abnormal 0 points.
A few major design parameters that most clocks follow includes 1 most wheel to pinion ratios are about 81 with cycloidal tooth profiles 2 the sweet spot for a clock gear train is 4 arbors, more arbors cause more friction, less arbors may require going outside the 81 recommended gear ratios 3 many escape wheels have 30 teeth 4 generally
I made this 'Cog Clock' which uses an ESP32 to control two stepper motors which drive separate hour and minute rings. It connects to my Wifi and uses NTP to
2 points for a normal clock or 0 zero points for an abnormal clock drawing. A normal clock must include all numbers 1-12, each only once, in the correct order and direction clockwise. There must also be two hands present, one pointing to the 11 and one pointing to 2. Hand length is not scored in the Mini-Cog algorithm.
screens. The Mini-Cog is a new instrument that combines a simple memory test with clock drawing CDT and appears to fulll these criteria. When used by expert raters, the Mini-Cog attained 99 sensitivity and 93 specicity in a split sample containing 50 demented persons, and required only 3 minutes to administer Borson et al., 2000.
Mini-Cog. Administration Say 3 nouns, e.g. rock, apple, shoe. Ask the person to repeat the words. Instruct the person to draw a clock by first drawing a circle, then adding numbers, and then setting the time to show 820.Instructions can be repeated and, if necessary, the subject can be told to draw a larger circle.
The graphical Mini-Cog was developed for rapid cognitive impairment screening in settings where a numerical score 0-5 is not required. The scoring system is the same as in the initial Borson et al, 2000 proof-of-concept publication see References.
Mini-cog The Mini-cog is a brief instrument to screen for cognitive impairment. - Since it can be completed quite quickly, it is convenient to use on the wards or clinic Test instructions Ask the patient to remember 3 words Ask them to draw a clock including the numbers. Place hands of clock at quot10 minutes past 11quot Ask the patient to repeat
