The 1.162 billion Gympie Bypass is a 26-kilometre, four-lane divided highway that bypasses Gympie and reduces heavy vehicle traffic through the town. The project is the final stage of the 62-kilometre Bruce Highway upgrade between Cooroy and Curra, which started in 2009 and cost over 2.5 billion.

This feedback also suggested there is concern about potential economic impacts of a bypass. This was a key consideration for the department in planning the next steps for the project.
Due to the scale of the upgrade and understanding that it would eventually bypass the city of Gympie, a strategic planning phase occurred between 2004 to 2008 where community engagement played a vital part in the development of the corridor for the Cooroy to Curra program.
