List Of Comets

This page gives the census of membership in various cometary groups. The orbital elements come from the 'ELEMENTS.COMET' file at JPL. There are nine lists Halley-type Tisserand invariant TJ lt 2, and orbital period P lt 200 years. This is the traditional period constraint. Excludes objects that are in the AAMBC list. The initial list of periodic comets was extracted from the 2003 version of the Catalog of Cometary Orbits Marsden amp Williams. Periodic updates to this list are obtained from IAU Circulars, Minor Planet Electronic Circulars and Central Bureau Electronic Telegrams. The list is complete through the date given.

The comet makes a transient appearance in the sky and is often said to have a quothairyquot tail. The word comes from the Greek komts, meaning quothairy one, quot a description that fits the bright comets noticed by the ancients. This is an alphabetically ordered list of significant comets.

Here is a list of 15 of the most common periodic comets known. These comets average in size from 3 miles 5 km to 10 miles 16 km. Three specific comets Borrelly, Wild 2, Churyumov-Gerasimenko are the most notable as they have given us the most understanding about comets. Two probes Deep Space 1 and Stardust were able to get close to

Comets have been a source of fascination and wonder throughout human history. These icy visitors from the outer reaches of our solar system have captivated the imagination of astronomers, skywatchers, and stargazers for centuries. The complete list of comet names serves as a reminder of our ongoing curiosity about these celestial objects, their paths, and their occasional visits to our night skies.

The final number simply means the order in which it was discovered in that period. If it was the first comet discovered in that half month, it receives a 1, if it was the second it receives a 2, etc. So a name like C2007 H2 really just means The second non-periodic comet discovered in the second half of June, 2007. Below is a table of designations and names of comets seen from the ground meaning that this listing omits those comets viewed only from spacecraft observing near the sun. Columns 1-15 contain the new-style designation established in 1995 X comets are those without orbits, and only those prior to the 5th century AD are listed here.
