Technically this walk cycle is only 2 frames but the way the frames are used makes it look like 4. This walk cycle is far more optimised that the classic from Mario 1. Castlevania III uses a middle frame, and again is a ping pong cycle, which uses an Idle frame 4th.

Just recently learning 3D animation, I was able to produce my first 3D animation walk cycle featuring Super Mario. A few stiff spots here and there, but it was really fun trying out something new.

The first task was to make Mario walk. Mario, it turns out, is animated with only twenty four images for the entire game To keep things simple, I elected to animate only Super Mario, and only in Level 1-1, which meant my palette was only six frames. Of those six, only three are used for walking, so my walking loop turned out to be fairly simple
