Railway Communication System Functional Block Diagram

Many of the current railway signaling systems are using the Fixed Block Signaling FBS model as shown in Fig. 1a. This model is provably reliable from today's technological perspective.

Communications-based train control CBTC is a railway signaling system that uses telecommunications between the train and track equipment for traffic management and infrastructure control. CBTC allows a train's position to be known more accurately than with traditional signaling systems. This can make railway traffic management safer and more efficient.

Trains are mostly worked on Absolute Block system or Automatic Block system over Indian Railways which have fixed length blocks. These systems maintain unutilized space between two trains running in the same direction. To utilize the track to its maximum capacity, modern communication based systems are used in some countries.

The basic components of a Communications-Based Train Control System and how they are inter- related are outlined inthe above diagram. The On-Board Processors are connected to the train sub-systems for manualATO, and the braking system, and to the on-board radio for communication with the Wayside Processors via the Data Radio network.

A block diagram of a communication system is a graphical representation of the components that make up a communication system and its functions. It typically includes input, transmitter, channel, receiver, and output blocks.
