Circular rainbows around quotlitquot clouds in photos. - posted in North American Total Solar Eclipse 2024 This was my second eclipse, but the first one with quite a bit of cloud-cover. We had a sort of haze from the top layer of clouds, and then fast moving lower clouds, with lots of openings though. So the clouds messed up my bracketing quite a bit - even a couple of full brackets have obvious

But a reassuring sight in the form of rainbow clouds occurred right after the eclipse. The atmospheric phenomenon is called cloud iridescence, which occurs when certain types of clouds bearing ice crystals diffract light from the sun. In the following photos, you can see a stretch of cloud iridescence above Antipolo. The photos were taken in

The time-resolved images were obtained from a high-altitude jet aircraft. Separately, we document a visual observation from the 1977 total solar eclipse of a rainbow that faded, in the last a few seconds before

Even a bird that flew through the scene has a rainbow light shining through its wings. I wonder why
