Solar Eclipse Animated
A solar eclipse can only occur during a new Moon, the phase of the Moon when it's positioned directly between the Earth and the Sun. Because the Moon's orbit around the Earth is tilted, not every new Moon results in an eclipse. This NASA animation shows how everything needs to line up just right for an eclipse to occur.
This animated Doodle celebrates the 2024 solar eclipse, which will be primarily seen in North and Central America. While solar eclipses occur between two and five times each year, total solar eclipses only take place roughly every 550 days. And. on average, it takes over 300 years for a total solar eclipse to be viewable from the same location.

About the Animations Below are links to eclipse animations which show views of solar and lunar eclipses as seen from various viewpoints.
Solar eclipses result from the alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Total solar eclipses in which the Sun is completely blocked by the Moon are a spectacular and rare sight to witness. In this animation adapted from NOVA, see why solar eclipses occur and observe a simulated total eclipse. This video is available in both English and Spanish audio, along with corresponding closed captions.
This conceptual animation is an example of what you might expect to see through certified eclipse glasses or a handheld solar filter during an annular solar eclipse, like the one happening over the United States on October 14, 2023.
