Wrens hold significance in Irish mythology, and an actual bird used to be hunted on St Stephen's Day, or Wren Day, before the musical parade. People usually just do the singing part nowadays, or use a fake bird. It's not a completely necessary part of St Stephen's Day but it adds a little fun and it's yet another Irish way to celebrate
