The Virginia Tech Helmet Lab allows researchers to provide unbiased helmet ratings that allow consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing helmets. The helmet ratings are the culmination of over 10 years of research on head impacts in sports and identify which helmets best reduce concussion risk.
Virginia Tech is widely regarded as the best third-party, independent testers of helmet impact severity at the high school and youth levels. Virginia Tech ranks helmets on a 1-5 star rating system. On their scoring system, the lower the score, the better the score. i.e., a helmet rating of 0.73 VICIS ZERO2 is better

Our ratings are an independent and objective assessment of helmet performance for consumers, free from manufacturer influence. We rate each bike helmet based on the results of 24 impact tests in our laboratory. A drop tower designed to match helmet-to-ground characteristics in cycling is used to test the helmets.

Thirteen years after releasing the first independent safety ratings for varsity football helmets, the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab is expanding beyond the field of athletics. This summer, researchers will begin an 18-month study to develop the first ratings system for safety helmets, also commonly referred to as hard hats or construction helmets.
