The Old East Entrance Trail is a short, easy hike for families. In the late 1960's, the highway was redone in this portion of North Dakota. It became a big separated freeway, and it no longer passed close to the east side of Teddy Roosevelt's South Entrance. Now it was easier to enter on the south. So, the east entrance was abandoned.

Old entrance station built in 1938 and used until the interstate moved the entrance to Medora in the '60s. Flat terrain, dirt trail, and well defined. Runs right through the middle of a prarie dog field so lots of quotdanger squeaksquot from them as you pass by.

This old abandoned entrance station lies on the route to Peck Hill, the highpoint of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. You can see part of the highpoint past the egg shaped hill. It is interesting to see it kind of in the middle of nowhere, hidden by junipers, a half mile from the main loop road. When Interstate 94 was built in 1968 and replaced US Highway 10, the park entrance was moved to Medora. The Old East Entrance, situated in one of the park's many active prairie dog towns, is a beautiful example of hand-hewn stone masonry. It harkens back to an earlier time in national parks, and is worth the 0.4 mile hike.
