Old East Unc Oldest Photograph
The University of North Carolina's Old East was the first building erected on a state university campus. The trustees chose its location in 1793 and planned to make it the first section of a three-part structure. Rather than hire an architect, in the custom of the time they designed it themselves and relied on a local contractor to erect it.
Old East is a residence hall located at the north part of campus in University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Built in 1793 by slave labor, it became the first state university building in the United States. 2 The Wren Building at the College of William amp Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, was built in 1695, but William and Mary did not become a public university until 1906.

Old East, on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is the oldest state university building in the nation. Except during short periods of extensive renovation in 1922-23 and 1991-93, it has been in constant use for more than two centuries. Old East, originally called the quotEast Building,quot sits at the crest of McCorkle Place.

Old East and Old West have undergone multiple repairs and renovations over the years. A major restoration project in the mid-1990s removed virtually all of the interiors and restored the exteriors to resemble their 1848 appearance. This effort included recreating the Philanthropic Society library space on the third floor of Old East.
The first building constructed to house America's first state university. The cornerstone was laid on October 12, 1793. The building was declared a national Historic Landmark in 1966.
